This photo was taken form the air on a cloudy day while flying to Auckland in late October 2000.
Don't despair about the weather - when I arrived in Auckland about an hour and a quarter later, it was considerably colder, with a very strong wind blowing (calm, hot, and
sunny in Nelson). This photo will be replaced when I get another chance to fly to Auckland, and the weather is clearer, and I am sitting on the right side of the plane, clear of the engines for
a similar shot.
Separation Point. This is the dividing line between Tasman Bay (bottom of picture) and Golden Bay (top of picture, disappearing under the
cloud)
2
Totaranui - Abel Tasman Natiinal Park headquarters are located here. This is the end of the road for those accessing the Park from Golden
Bay, and is the Northern end of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track - one of the most popular walking tracks in the world. There is a regular bus
service (mainly in summer) to here, from Nelson, about 3 hours away.
3
Awaroa Inlet. The Abel Tasman Coastal Track from Marahau to Totaranui crosses this inlet at low tide, or takes a lengthy detour around the
edge when the tide is in. There is also a pocket of private land here not included in the National Park, and a tourist lodge (with limited road
access).
4
Tonga Island. Just one of the many seascape features to be seen on the track from Marahau to Totaranui.
