Photo of Tahunanui Beach

This photo was taken form the air on a dull day while flying in to Nelson in late October 2000.
Don't despair about the weather - when I left Auckland about an hour and a quarter earlier, it was at least three degrees colder, raining, and a strong wind was blowing (calm and dry in Nelson).
This photo will be replaced when I get another chance to fly to Auckland or Wellington, and the weather is better, and I am sitting on the right side of the plane for a similar shot.

Landmarks etc. in photo of Tahunanui Beach

1 Tahunanui Beach. Safe swimming for the whole family along here. Rocks Road, the main road to the centre of the city (about 6 minutes away, to the left) runs along the coast from the edge of the photo to where the beach ends. The main road (State Highway 6) continues south from here and shows up on the photo as a dark line running to the right, and just above the number 5.
2 This is the area of the beach where dog and horse exerecising is allowed. The large white patch in the trees to the right of the number 2 is the roof of the (roller) skating rink. The rough looking water to the left of the number 2, are the sand banks which are exposed at low tide (this photo is taken about an hour before high tide) - these sand banks can be seen clearly in the photo looking over Tasman Bay.
3 The Back Beach. At high tide, this area is filled in with sea water.
4 Tahuna Beach Holiday Park - one of the largest camping grounds in the Southern Hemisphere with a full range of camping sites and accommodation cabins/motels etc. available, along with full conference facilities and its own supermarket.
5 The suburb of Tahunanui.
