Landmarks etc. in photo of Rabbit Island and Tahunanui

Mt Arthur, in the Kahurangi National Park, is only half the height of New Zealand's highest peak, Mt. Cook, but is higher (just) than the highest mountain in Australia. The Nettlebed caving system is below Mt. Arthur. It is possible to drive to one of the car parks near Mt Arthur and walk to the top and return home to Nelson in one day, but leave it for the height of summer when the days are long, and only think of doing it in the one day if you are fit - take plenty of food and water, and your warm clothing and other camping gear as the weather can change fairly quickly up here (as it can with all of New Zealand's alpine regions).
Mt. Campbell. The nearest volcanic crater (long extinct) to Nelson. At the top is a transmission tower used for radio and television communication throughout the Tasman Bay and Golden Bay regions
On the coastline here is Mapua, home of the country's oldest official public clothes optional resort.
Rabbit Island. 8km of beach, much of it safe for swimming for the whole family. There is a public picnic area with all beach facilities in the middle of this Council owned island which is used primarily for foresty. It takes the best part of a full day to walk right around the whole island following the coastline.
Tahunanui Beach, with the Back Beach showing as the brown area just below the number 5 (this is filled with sea water at high tide - this can just be see in the second photo at the bottom of the page).
Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. One of the largest camping grounds in the Southern Hemisphere.
Nelson Golf Course. A full 18 hole golf course in the middle of the city. The northern end of the airport is on the left hand edge of this grassed area (also seen more clearly in the second photo at the bottom of the page, with the white markings at the end of the runway visible), and one of Nelson's main industrial areas fills the area below here to the bottom of the photo. The large tidal area above the northern end of the airport runway (clearly visible in the second photo below), is the south eastern part of the Moutere Inlet, one of the largest tidal estury areas in New Zealand - shown here with the tide in.
The residential area of Tahunanui. About half of Nelson's Motels can be found in this area.
