The White concrete column on the point is the memorial to Abel Tasman, the Dutch explorer who first discovered New Zealand over 500 years ago. At this point, he first came ashore and there was the first meeting between Europeans and Maoris. Shortly after, 4 of Tasman's crew were murdered and he named the place Murders Bay. There is a public viewing platform just visible at the base of the memorial after a couple of minutes walk from the road before it comes down the hill to Ligar Bay, where this photo was taken from.
