Photo of Marahau and the Abel Tasman National Park

This photo was taken form the air on a cloudy day while flying to Auckland in late October 2000.
Don't despair about the weather - when I arrived in Auckland about an hour and a quarter laterer, it was considerably colder, with a very strong wind blowing (calm, hot, and sunny in Nelson).
This photo will be replaced when I get another chance to fly to Auckland, and the weather is clearer, and I am sitting on the right side of the plane, clear of the engines for a similar shot.

The photo of Totaranui joins this photo, to the right.

Landmarks etc. in photo of Marahau and the Abel Tasman National Park

1 Sandy Bay, with the settlement of Marahau on the coast just below the number 1.
2 Marahau entrance to the Abel Tasman National Park. This is the start of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track to Totaranui, one of the most popular and scenic coastal tracks in the world. There are regular bus servies to here from Motueka and Nelson. Sea kyaking businesses etc. all operate from here. All the hills etc. to the right of here are in the Abel Tasman National Park.
3 Astrolab Island (and the smaller Fishermans Island to the left) is where the local seals live. It is common to see them here when doing the sea kyaking trips from Marahau.
4 Torrent Bay is one of the main tidal esturies in the Abel Tasman National Park (the other is Awaroa, just to the south of Totaranui), and like Awaroa, it can be crossed at low tide, otherwise it is a long walk around the edge. Torrent Bay is a popular holiday spot for the locals as well as being a popular camping area for those walking from Marahau to Totaranui.
